Being a crossover athlete, or doing both school & allstar cheer, has its benefits – you get more practice time, more opportunities to compete and may be able to experience a variety of stunt positions.

Although it’s fun, there are some downsides to committing to multiple teams – you have less time for friends, homework and other commitments, and you may become burnt out, both mentally and physically.

Here are some tips for those of you on more than one team:

USE YOUR NON-PRACTICE DAYS WISELY

These days are your chance to catch up on school and other chores that you can’t afford to put off. Even though you may feel like laying on the couch all day watching Netflix, spend at least some time getting ahead on things you know you won’t have time for later in the week. This will avoid late nights and last-minute stress.

RECHARGE IN YOUR FREE TIME

Once you’ve completed any mandatory tasks like studying or chores, make time to do fun things that take your mind off of cheer. Hang out with friends, relax with family, go outside or spend time alone.

HAVE A CONSISTENT SLEEP SCHEDULE

Go to bed at an appropriate time every night so you don’t wake up exhausted and spend your free time during the day napping. Having a good sleep schedule and allowing yourself to sleep enough hours will ensure you’re energized for the day and can spend any breaks doing school, eating, etc., rather than catching up on those missed hours.

MAKE TIME FOR RECOVERY

Practicing most days and competing twice the amount can take a toll on you physically. During your breaks and off-days, allow yourself to rest and recover. Eat nutrient dense foods that provide you with lots of energy, avoid processed junk foods, drink lots of water, sleep extra if needed and take care of any soreness or pains that you feel may impact your upcoming practices.
