As I’ve said in past Instagram posts, if you can lose your tumbling easily, you never really “had” it in the first place.

Skills shouldn’t come and go easily. If they do, you’re still in the learning process and need to do more reps, drills and consistent training!

Whether this is the case for you, or you just haven’t done the skill in a while, here are some tips to get it back:

GO BACK TO THE BASICS

Break down the skill into its components. For example, a back handspring can be broken down into a jump and handstand snap. Train each component on its own by doing drills.

PRACTICE AWAY FROM THE FLOOR

If you’re feeling unsure about tumbling on the spring floor right away, go on another surface like a tumble track, trampoline, rod floor, etc. Do the skill there as many times as you need, then gradually move to harder surfaces until you’re on the floor.

GET YOUR REPS IN

The more reps, the better! Do your skill over and over (only with correct technique of course), even when you feel like you’ve got it down. This will build up your comfort, familiarity and confidence again.

FIND THE PROBLEM SPOTS

If you “lost” a skill because you have trouble being consistent with the overall movement or technique, record yourself as you practice to see where any errors are, or ask a coach to point out what they notice. Striving for consistent, correct technique will help prevent you from “losing” it again in the future.
